La Boheme was a production I worked on at The Mission theatre in combination with Cardiff Opera company, my role for this show was the lighting designer and technician, working closely with the director to achieve lighting and sound throughout the show.
There were alot of challenges and interesting areas of this show - some of which are outlined in the testimonial below. The show was created using purely generic fixtures and the use of gels. The programming of the show also involved creating custom effects one of which being a flickering fire inside of a bucket aswell as tracking cues to follow movement around the space.
Testimonial from Katie Blackwell director of La Bohéme:
" I had the privilege of working with Oscar in December 2023, on a production of ’La Boheme’ at The Mission Theatre, Bath, with Cardiff Opera. I was the director and Oscar was the lighting technician. We had a very tight rehearsal window (we rehearsed and teched the show in four days), and Oscar was absolutely brilliant at accommodating the needs of the production in such a short time frame. Oscar is attentive and creative; he offered helpful suggestions when we were faced with problems, but also carried out the direction wonderfully. For example, we had a lengthy scene that required a fire being lit and dying over and over; the theatre wouldn’t permit real fire, so this was entirely created through lighting. Oscar had about twenty minutes to pull it off, and it was an extremely effective visual. I was very impressed with Oscar’s professionalism and work ethic, especially for someone so young – he also has an infectious enthusiasm for the work that he does, which is a joy to see. He would be an asset to any university department, and I look forward to seeing where his career will take him! "
